about

Mukta (solo piccolo) by Jane Rigler 2015
As part of my research of new music for the piccolo, this work demonstrates a variety of techniques not yet performed by other players. Mukta means “freedom” in Sanskrit. I was thinking there was a little animal in the instrument, trying to escape. I use what I call a “vacuum pressure” technique to capture air in the piccolo. I consider the instrument is divided into four parts: the mouth/embouchure hole, the left hand, the right hand and the end of the piccolo (which can be blocked by the right hand pinky). In this way, I can discover all the various simultaneous relationships between open/closed parts for the air, sound, breath, and voice to finally escape.
